Map of Virginia

Virginia 1618

Of sometimes questionable accuracy, de Bry’s map was one of the first depictions of the first British colony in North America.

A map of Virginia in North America, published in England in 1618

By the noted Flemish engraver and publisher Theodorus de Bry. Taken from volume one of his multi-volume work Americae, part of the Grandes Voyages series, a collection which gave many Europeans their first visual representations of North America. The accuracy of many of his illustrations is questionable: although he based them on first-hand accounts and drawings, he never visited America himself, and often mixes up customs and artifacts from different tribes.
