A large birds-eye view of Venice

By Matthäus Merian, a renowned Swiss-born engraver who married into the famous De Bry publishing and engraving family, and later ran his publishing business from Frankfurt. This is a modified copy of an enormous, officially-commissioned woodcut bird’s-eye view that had been first published in 1500. It became the model for all later depictions of the city before the 1720s. The original, which measures 133 by 281 cms – or four times the size of Merian’s modified derivative – is a celebration of the power of the Venetian Republic, and a symbol of its continued maritime, commercial and artistic importance.
