Forming part of a hand-written medieval psalter from around 1265
This diminutive but highly detailed map was probably copied from much larger originals, now lost, at the court of Henry III. This map, and the simpler world map on the next page, are placed just before a calendar, the twelve pages of which illustrate the typical activities of each month, and the calendar is followed by the psalms. It is as if this map was intended to provide a geographical but also overall spiritual framework for the illustrations and holy words in the rest of the book. See also M045.
