Forming part of a hand-written medieval psalter from around 1265
This diminutive but highly detailed map was probably copied from much larger originals, now lost, at the court of Henry III. This map – very much a list of towns and other important sites, and the more ornate world map on the previous page, are placed just before a calendar, the twelve pages of which illustrate the typical activities of each month, and the calendar is followed by the psalms. It is as if this map was intended to provide a geographical but also overall spiritual framework for the illustrations and holy words in the rest of the book. See also M044.
