A 1524 map of the Holy Roman Empire
Taken from Gelegenheit Teutscher Lannd … published by Georg Erlanger in Bamberg. The Emperor at this time was the Habsburg Charles V, who spent most of his reign at war – with the Ottomans, the German Princes (following Martin Luther’s Reformation, begun in 1521) and the French, including the recapture of the Duchy of Milan, which had been annexed by Francis I in 1515.
