A large birds-eye view of Rome

Engraved by Matthäus Merian, a renowned Swiss-born engraver who married into the famous De Bry publishing and engraving family, and later ran his publishing business from Frankfurt. This map was based on an eastward-oriented model by Antonio Tempesta, and was issued at the height of the Italian Renaissance. Falling between two major phases of building, the map shows many structures that have since vanished, such as the Column of Antoninus Pius.
