John Senex’ map of North America, showing the expansion of colonies from Canada to Florida.
A map of North America, taken from his General Atlas and dated 1721, by John Senex, an English cartographer, engraver and map seller. He was also an astrologer, geologist and geographer to Queen Anne. The main map shows the eastern colonies from Newfoundland to Carolina, Canada (or New France), Terra Labrador and Florida. Possibly best known for his globes, which now fetch very high prices at auction, Senex also specialised in miniature maps (he re-published Ogilby’s Britannia in this form in 1719), and had a particular fondness for depicting California as an island.
