This patriotic map, first published in Amsterdam in about 1674
Celebrates the recapture of New York by the Dutch from the English in August 1673 during the third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-4). It may have been created to persuade Dutch decision makers of New Amsterdam’s importance, as compared to the Dutch settlements in South America, at a time when one or the other was at threat of being bartered to the English in return for peace.
