London 1653

John Norden’s map of London was the first to have a street index – the forerunner of the A-Z.

A 1653 map of London

With an accompanying index of streets – the forerunner of the modern A-Z. Created by John Norden, an English cartographer, chorographer, surveyor and antiquary, who planned (but did not complete) a series of county maps and accompanying county histories of England, the Speculum Britanniae, from which this map is taken. Originally published in 1593, this was the second revised version, with an enlarged table of references.
