A 1650 map of the Netherlands
Depicted as a lion, originally intended as a piece of propaganda in support of the revolt of the seven Calvinist northern provinces against the ruling Catholic Spanish Habsburgs, which lasted from 1567 to 1648. Based on an original map by Joannes van Doetecum (published in 1598, and revised twice in the 1630s, when war was raging), this was one of several variants reissued by Claes Jansz.Visscher.
