Created by Wenceslaus Hollar, this 1670 map of Italy was further embellished by Nicolas Sanson and Richard Blome.
This was a turbulent century for Italy, with outbreaks of the Black Death ravaging the population, and Spain, the dominant foreign power, increasing its influence. The Counter-Reformation was also at its height, and despite a flourishing of the arts and sciences, the region was in overall economic decline.
