This is an enlarged version, published in France in 1643, of Willem and Joan Blaeu’s 1638 map of France, originally published in their Theatre du Monde
Willem was the son of a herring salesman, and might have followed in his footsteps, but instead studied astronomy under Tycho Brahe, became a globe-maker, and then a creator, printer and publisher of maps. As one of the leading cartographers of his time, he became official map-maker to the Dutch East India Company in 1633, a position also held by his son Joan after his death in 1638.
