A member of the 16th century Dieppe school of cartographers, Jean Rotz was born to a Scottish father and a French mother. This map of Europe and North Africa is taken from his Boke of Idrography, (containing 11 regional charts, also known as the The ‘Rotz Atlas’), published in 1542. Having participated in French-led expeditions to Sumatra and Brazil, Rotz unsuccessfully sought employment with Francis I, and turned instead to Henry VIII in England, whom he served as Royal Hydrographer.
