Highlighting the possessions of the British Empire and their main economic resources, along with the main steamship routes (existing and proposed), and a host of information useful to prospective emigrants, including the advice that ‘the Anglo Saxon Race deteriorate usually in residing between 25° Lat. North and South of the Equator.’ The 1840s and 1850s were decades of great upheaval in the United Kingdom, with 2 million people fleeing the Irish Famine, large numbers leaving Scotland following the Highland Clearances, and many others trying to escape poverty.
