The only known copy of the first English map of India, this was drawn by William Baffin, the renowned explorer of the North West Passage. Following his voyages to the Arctic (c.1612-16) he was employed by the East India Company as master’s mate aboard the Anne Royal, and very probably drew this map on a voyage back to England in 1619. A notable passenger on this voyage was Sir Thomas Roe, who was returning from a spell as Ambassador to the Court of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir at Agra, a very successful diplomatic relationship that led to the granting of considerable privileges to the East India Company. It is not known whether Baffin and Roe collaborated on the map at all.
