Drake’s Voyage 1581

Almost certainly copied from Drake’s own Grand Map (presented to Queen Elizabeth, and now lost), van Sype’s map was published the year after his return.

Compiled in 1581 by Nicola van Sype in Antwerp

This map depicts the route taken by Sir Francis Drake on his circumnavigation of the globe (1577-80), only the second such successful expedition, after Magellan (1519-22). Soldier, navigator, explorer, MP, Mayor of Plymouth, hero to the English, scourge of the Spanish (to whom he was a pirate), Drake was the first Englishman to sight the Pacific Ocean, and the first to land in California, which he claimed for the Crown and named Nova Albion.
