A coloured map of Africa, from around 1710, created by Adam Friedrich Zürner and published in Amsterdam by Peter Schenk.
At this time European colonisation of Africa was limited to a few coastal areas involved in the slave trade – much of the interior remained unexplored by westerners. Early maps of Africa were thus often built around considerable conjecture and based on sparse information, at best.
