A 1749 map of Africa, engraved by Guillaume de la Haye
With cartography by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697-1782), a painstaking and very accurate map-maker, who would rather leave blank spaces than include unverified information. He published his first serious map at the age of 15, and was appointed as one of Louis XV’s geographers when he was 22.
